What the star score means
Every product carries a score out of 5 labelled “Editorial score”. It is our own judgement — one number, decided by the FairwayGadget team. It is not a user rating, not an average of customer reviews, and not a measure of how well anything sells. We do not collect reviews and we hold no sales data, so we have nothing of that kind to report.
How we arrive at it
We compare published specs across the models in the same category — accuracy, what the device actually measures, range, battery and connectivity.
We weigh that against the price it typically sells for in Thailand, so a cheaper unit that covers the basics can out-score a flagship.
We factor in practical use: setup, whether it works indoors or in bright sun, and how much faff it is to use every round.
We adjust it when something changes — a firmware update, a price shift, or a newer model that resets what “good” means in that category.
The score is a starting point for comparison, not a verdict. It is built from published specifications, price and practical considerations — not from our own lab measurements — so the specs and the trade-offs we list matter more than the number.
Where we rank products — our ranked picks page, category round-ups, the picks on the home page — the order comes from this score and our editorial ordering. Nothing on this site is ordered by popularity, sales or review volume.
Some products carry no score at all. A model we list before we can source a Thai retail price is missing the price input this method depends on, so instead of inventing a number we mark it “Not scored yet”. Those products sit at the bottom of every score-ranked list until a Thai price we can point to exists.
